The sixth edition of the Integrated conference, subtitled ‘Between Creativity and Criminality: The Art and Design of the Civil Domain’, focused on the ambiguous space between market and state. In this civil domain, innovative design ideas, both physical and virtual, are often incubated in a grey zone between legality and illegality.Upon brief, we were confronted with these interesting paradoxes: does this public space still offer an inviting canvas for communication, and is this space still primarily physical? Posters have become wallpaper in the urban landscape while people walk by, staring at their phones. Other communication deliverables included a brochure, programme booklet, stage design, motion video for speaker announcements, tickets, bracelets and merchandise. misdemeanors, evil dentists, animal robots, corporate nonsense, dismembering water, mind control and much more. Karel van de Peer, Dries de Langhe and myself engineered our own conspiracy theory about a multinational corporation called Tyche, which was actually an Illuminati-like organization that secretly ruled the world, known by conspiracy theorists as Alpha. We used installations, posters, websites, interactive puzzles and other means to tell a story based on this conspiracy to our class- and schoolmates. During the project, our fellow students were unaware that it was us who were terrorizing the school. This promise could be in the form of the name of a cheap hotel that suggests the experience of a distant place, or the image of a mass product that evokes luxury or exoticness rather unconvincingly. Alptekin was an artist who could see the profound effects global capitalism had on everyday life.
